In 1999, the Native Hawaiian Center of Excellence began building
the Native Hawaiian Health Database (NHHD) to support research
and education regarding Native Hawaiian health issues. The database
is a clearinghouse of information intended for researchers, physicians,
students, and all those interested in learning more about the
issues concerning the health of Native Hawaiians. The database
includes bibliographic references for audiovisual materials, books,
book chapters, journal articles, conference proceedings, dissertations,
government documents, program descriptions, reports, and websites.
Most items are located at the University of Hawaii libraries,
the Hawaii Medical Library, and can be requested by interlibrary
loan.
Native Hawaiian Medical Database
The total population of Native Hawaiians is around 20%. Did you
know that only 5.5% of the practicing physicians in the state
of Hawai'i are of Native Hawaiian ancestry?
The Native Hawaiian Physician Database is designed to provide
an accurate count of Native Hawaiian physicians. This information
makes it possible to approximate the number of Native Hawaiian
physicians both in the state, on the continental United States,
and abroad.
If you are a Native Hawaiian physician, or if you know of any
Native Hawaiian physicians, please fill out our online form; or
contact Martina Kamaka, M.D. at martinak@hawaii.edu.
All information is kept confidential and used for our mailing
list purposes only. Mahalo nui loa.
